Individual Sessions with the Career Development Practitioner

Here’s an overview of the main questions to address what you can expect from individual sessions.

The What and How?

Booking of sessions
There are many ways to book a session. You can select your preferred option from the below:

  • Provide us with your details on our website under the ‘MAKE A BOOKING’ tab. Here, you can also select a preferred date and time slot for sessions at the click of a button. Note that session availability will only be confirmed in writing on receipt of your booking enquiry.
  • Email us at info@occupationalinsight.co.za.
  • Call us on 087 379 7857 (Monday to Friday, between 08:30 – 16:30).

Upon making a booking enquiry, clients receive our welcome guide and rates. You then choose the required services and make a booking. Clients must complete the booking by providing consent to the services and by completing and submitting required documentation to prepare for the session. This documentation includes POPI data protection agreements/consent, our standard career services agreement, and client details and needs forms. This ensures that the practitioner meets professional requirements in maintaining a practical and effective file for each client, can draw on the client's information during sessions and that applicable laws protect the client's information and records.

Our welcome guide includes fees for services, which must be paid on or before the session/service is rendered. Bookings will be confirmed with clients via email before each session.

We'll be able to help you with any questions or areas of clarity you may have about a session before actually making a booking. Feel free to email us at info@occupationalinsight.co.za.

Before the session

Preparing for the session is paramount to ensure you derive the maximum possible value from each session. Here are some guidelines for preparation:

  • Complete the needs assessment form/link- this will be used to guide and structure the sessions.
  • Clients must have copies of their work and study records, qualifications, CV, work profiles/job descriptions, and other occupational/study achievements. These must be submitted on or before their first session and will serve as a critical input for the practitioner to provide further guidance and information.
  • Please ensure that the setting where you will take the online session is private and free from noise and disturbance. You'll need to be free and comfortable sharing information with the practitioner during the session, so please select the location carefully.
  • Take some time to prepare mentally and reflect on your life goals, aspirations, strengths, abilities, talents, skills, interests, and preoccupations. This will be discussed during the session, and clients will be referred to self-exploration and non-standardised activities to illuminate any areas for greater self-discovery.
  • Please consider what you want to gain from the session and note any additional questions, topics of clarity, or insights needed. These may change as the session progresses, but you will have the practitioner on hand for any further information.

During the session

Each client's career story, life journey, goals, and study aspirations are unique. Thus, sessions differ between individual clients based on their needs and purpose in seeking career and study guidance information. Common topics which can be covered and tailored to your career as an individual are (but not limited to):

  • Self-exploration tasks and checklists (non-standardised) to find passion and discover more about the self.
  • Self-exploration activities (non-standardised) to further understand careers and their interplay with the self.
  • Access to and support with the mycareer self-exploration resource toolkit.
  • NCAP report analysis and recommendations.
  • Presenting career and study options aligned to clients' identified work-related interests, skills, knowledge and values.
  • School subject selection and proactive planning of subject achievements for qualification application.
  • Qualification entry requirement information and calculations (Admission Points Score (APS)).
  • Alternative application options for entry, including Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  • Information on accredited institutions of higher/further learning and referrals.
  • Options for articulation (diversifying my qualification(s)), progression (furthering my qualification(s)), or starting a new qualification/career path.
  • Funding and finance considerations for career and study options.
  • Sector-specific occupational information (Hard-to-fill vacancies (HTFV) and scarce/critical skill information).
  • Career pathing, typified careers in a given occupation, trending occupations, and related labour market information.
  • Information on the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and sub-frameworks, including the Organising Framework for Occupations (OFO).

After the session

All work from sessions are securely stored in the client's file, and clients are provided with copies of their records to enable decision-making and reflection. Occupational Insight will maintain the client’s file/records under the applicable laws and the Protection of Personal Information Act. After reflecting on sessions, clients are free to connect with and engage the practitioner with any questions, areas of clarity or support. We place the quality of sessions at the heart of what we do, and clients will be invited to evaluate the quality of services periodically. Comprehensive, integrated session reports will be available to each client after their sessions. Accompanying referral letters, activities, or recommendations will also be available.

Support

Remember, the practitioner is here to co-navigate the journey with you! Individual session clients will have personal access to the practitioner for follow-ups, questions and support before, during and after individual sessions.

The When?

We offer flexibility and convenience. Clients have a choice of the date/time for sessions (pending availability—early bookings are thus essential). We host individual sessions online seven days a week and cater to working/studying clients with after-hours and weekend sessions available. Session slots are available between the following days/times:

Monday to Friday (09:00 – 19:00)

Saturdays and Sundays (10:00 – 14:00)

Public Holidays (Closed)

Individual sessions are available by appointment only.

NB: Please get in touch with us for availability options if you require a session outside the above time slots.

The session will be conducted between our registered Career Development Practitioner: Career Information Officer, and the individual client. No other parties attend sessions, and all information shared is strictly confidential and protected by the applicable laws.

If a client wishes for their spouse, parent/legal guardian, or other representative to participate in their session, this will only be arranged upon the client's own written request.

The Where?

Accessibility is at the fore - No need to travel. Individual sessions take place online (virtually) from anywhere across South Africa. Clients can take sessions from the comfort and privacy of their home, office or other suitable venue. Clients will, however, need access to the following:

  • A device to connect to the internet with access to email (Smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.).
  • A stable connection to the internet and adequate data for the sessions.
  • Microsoft Teams or Zoom software is installed on the device and set up for use (Please get in touch with us if you prefer to use different teleconferencing software).
  • Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader (or similar) PDF software to access written material, activities, forms and reports, which the Practitioner will discuss and may share before, during and after sessions.

Group Sessions with the Career Development Practitioner

Here’s an overview of the main questions to address what you can expect from group career and study information sessions. Each group session is uniquely packaged and structured to support the client’s overall purpose and objectives for the session.

Sessions differ based on the group's collective interests, needs and goals. In this regard, each group session is preceded by a written group session proposal to plan a more direct and effective career and study information session. The proposal is tailored by Occupational Insight for each group client to ensure that the client's needs and those of the targeted group members are fully realised and aligned with the structure, content and activities planned for the session. Group sessions unite people and are powerful tools for school, public/private career guidance days, company team building, and education and career events (indoor or outdoor). Group members are confined to a group charter, which specifies rules of engagement to ensure group members function in an ethical framework for the benefit of all attendees.

  • Call us on 087 379 7857 (Monday to Friday, between 08:30 – 16:30).

Upon making a booking enquiry, clients receive our welcome guide and rates. You choose the required services and complete a group needs assessment form. The group session needs assessment is our guide when planning and customising the group career and study information session. Clients must complete the booking by providing consent to the services and by completing and submitting documentation to prepare for the session. This documentation includes POPI data protection agreements/consent, our standard career services agreement, and client details form. Group sessions will only be confirmed on receipt of the required forms and client acceptance of the group session proposal.

Payment is required to confirm group bookings. Bookings will be confirmed with clients via email before session commencement. As requirements, goals and the setting for a group session may differ considerably, we approach each group session on a case-by-case basis. We'll be able to help you with any questions or areas of clarity you may have about a session before actually making a booking. Feel free to email us at info@occupationalinsight.co.za.

Before the session

Preparation for the session is paramount to ensure group member attendees derive maximum value from every session. Here are some guidelines for group preparation:

  • Group session attendees must carry copies of their qualifications, CV, work profile/job descriptions, and other occupational/study achievements to refer to during group discussions or breakaways.
  • Ensure that the setting where you intend to host the group session is accessible, free from noise and disturbance, and private from other sessions (for both online and on-site sessions). If you require assistance with on-site venue logistics and venue bookings as part of the group session proposal, we have options for suitable indoor and outdoor sites to host sessions across South Africa.
  • Group session attendees must be briefed well on the session, its purpose and consent to participate.
  • The group needs assessment form will guide the practitioner and group members on the general information and topics to be covered during sessions. The programme for the group session, guided by the group session proposal and accompanying reference material, can be shared on or before the group session engagement.

During the session

Due to the wide assortment of individual and group needs, sessions differ from client to client and are driven by the collective goals and needs of the group. Group sessions are more generalist as compared to individual settings and cover a wide array of career and study topics relevant to the group setting. Topics which may be covered during group sessions include (but are not limited to):

  • Access to mycareer self-exploration resource toolkit.
  • Targeted or broad career and study information sessions tailored to specific occupations, occupational groups or sub-sectors.
  • Sector-specific study options and learning pathways.
  • Sector-specific career options and career pathways.
  • Information on alternative pathways to qualification entry for employee progression (RPL, ARPL, CAT).
  • Understanding SETAs, OQSF and Workplace-Based Learning Programmes (WBLP).
  • Unpacking Workplace-Based Learning (WBL) pathways (SETA-funded and industry-funded).
  • Work-readiness group workshops, inductions and career orientation.
  • Job search strategies.
  • Funding options for studies.
  • Sectoral occupational information (Hard to Fill Vacancies (HTFV) and scarce/critical skill information).
  • Information on the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and sub-frameworks, Organising Framework for Occupations (OFO) and the related labour market.

Please feel free to contact us if you require a group career and study information session on specific topics not mentioned above.

After the session

All work from group sessions are filed in the group’s file, and group members are provided with copies of their own records for decision-making, reflection, and to prompt further exploration. Occupational Insight will maintain the group's file/records under the applicable laws and the Protection of Personal Information Act. The group file shall be made available to the practitioner for future follow-up group sessions. We place the quality of sessions at the heart of what we do, and clients will be invited to evaluate the quality of services received.. Post sessions, a comprehensive, integrated group report will be made available to clients.

Support

All group sessions contain a dedicated question-and-answer slot, and the practitioner will remain on-site or online for a pre-determined period after conclusion of the session to address any follow-up queries. Group sessions differ from one-on-one individual sessions, and if clients require private individual sessions, they are free to make further individual bookings.

The When?

We offer clients flexibility and convenience. For group sessions, clients can choose the date/time and whether to host the session online or on-site. We have options for on-site sessions across South Africa. Planning for the session's success must commence as early as possible, so early bookings are essential.

Online group session slots are available between the following days/times:

Monday to Friday (09:00 – 19:00)

Saturdays and Sundays (10:00 – 14:00)

Public Holidays (Closed)

Online and on-site group sessions are available by appointment only. Acceptance of the group session proposal, payment of fees and a booking confirmation confirms the session.

NB: We require a minimum 72-hour notice period for on-site group sessions to enable planning and arrange for travel and logistics (where applicable). Please contact us for availability options if you require a session outside the above time slots.

The Who?

Our registered Career Development Practitioner: Career Information Officer conducts the session with the group. Due to the dynamics of group sessions, members will not be forced to share personal, confidential, or any other information they are not comfortable providing in a group setting. As such, a group charter has been devised to protect the safety of group participants and the individual rights of all members.

The Where?

Sessions occur online (virtually), at your site, or at a suitable indoor or outdoor venue. Should a client wish to host the group session on-site, we travel to client sites across South Africa. We even offer assistance with securing suitable external venues  (indoor or outdoor), logistics, and event coordination as part of the group session offering. Group sessions occur across South Africa; however, early bookings are essential.

For online group sessions, clients can take sessions from the comfort and privacy of their home, office/school/institution boardroom or other suitable venue. Clients will however need access to the following:

  • A device to connect to the internet with access to email (Smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.).
